Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) During Pregnancy.




To find some stability during pregnancy when the ligaments around pelvic bone go soft ,too soft.









Symphysis pubis dysfunction or Pelvic Girdle Pain, is the pain and discomfort felt due to ligament laxity and loosening which holds the pelvic bone during the pregnancy which precipitate to unstable pelvic joint .























Symptoms of SPD:


  1. Unbearable Pain and discomfort while walking .
  2. Pain can radiate to upper thigh and perineum.
  3. Pain aggravate while weight bearing activities .
  4. Pain felt especially climbing steps, getting in and out of car, dressing or even turning on bed.
  5. Heaviness and tenderness over pubis symphysis.


Causes of SPD:


Pregnancy hormone RELAXIN which keeps the ligaments so relaxed and stretchy  so that baby can easily make an entry in world.


Sometimes Relaxin plays more active role that it loosens the ligaments around pelvic cavity quite early before delivery.





Complication of SPD:


Sometimes rarely this condition will leads to Diastasis Symphsis Pubis or Symphyseal Separation which might need a medical intervention after delivery.This condition will give immense pain in your pelvis ,groin, hips and buttocks which gets worse after delivery.


Treatment of SPD during pregnancy:


  1. Apply hot and cold pack to pubic area for 5 mins by moving the pack .
  2. Pelvic Girdle Strengthening Rehabilitation under supervision.
  3. Avoid weight bearing activities like one leg climbing stairs, wearing pants in standing position, keep pillow between the legs while turning on bed .
  4. Pelvic Girdle Support Belt .
  5. Postural Correction .
